Why do you restore at all?

Antique furniture have usually seen a lot. That is why they often have their special charm. However, its eventful history has sometimes left unpleasant marks. Perhaps the function is impaired by wear and tear (e.g. jammed drawers, quirks and bumps, drying cracks), or the originality is falsified by improper repairs (e.g. unsuitable strips or fittings). Often the appearance of an antique suffers from the gray and scratched surface. It is not uncommon for a piece of furniture like this to be painted to cover it at some point – the original beauty of the piece may hardly be recognizable … In such cases, a restoration makes sense.

Advantages of a professional restoration:

  • Keeping antiques in good condition helps to maintain or even increase their value
  • Antique furniture is a piece of history that is worth preserving. We are grateful to the generations before us who recognized this and want to value our heritage as well.
  • • Antiques create individual living quality – they have character, often testify to the astonishingly stylish taste of the “ancestors”
  • A good restoration allows a piece of furniture to appear as it was originally “meant” without destroying the charm that has grown over the years.

Restoring does not mean: “making new”

A good carpenter may not necessarily be a good restorer. Restoring is much more than removing damage. If you straighten, clean and repair too much, it can endanger or even destroy the established charisma and “used” look (one speaks of patina) of a piece of furniture. Anyone who restores, absolutely needs a feeling for

th authentic “personality” of an antique, i.e. he takes into account the style and history of a piece. This requires some experience.

A successful restoration is, so to speak, “invisible”, at least for anyone who does not know the previous state of the furniture. All those who are in on the secret look forward to the transformation that may have made a “frog a prince”, because the furniture is allowed to show its true face again …

When is a restoration valid?

Of course, a restoration must also be measured in terms of cost-benefit, although the benefit can sometimes hardly be expressed in monetary terms because ideal values (family property – childhood memories …) may be associated with furniture. Nevertheless, a restoration usually also makes sense for more calculating minds. Antique furniture is often superior, i.e. quality seldom achieved today, its increase in value with increasing age occurs naturally, is highly reliable and hardly subject to market fluctuations. Should the effort of a restoration exceed the value of the furniture, or the furniture simply does not warrant so much attention, we like to be open and honest and talk about it with our customers.
